Frequently asked questions

Are all-weather tires legal as winter tires in Alberta?
Yes. Any tire marked with the 3PMSF symbol (three-peak mountain snowflake) meets Transport Canada's winter-tire standard — and that includes every all-weather tire we sell. They're also accepted on Highway 93 and the Trans-Canada through the mountains during the Oct 1 to Apr 30 winter-tire period.
Will all-weather tires work in -30°C Calgary cold snaps?
Yes, with a caveat. The rubber compound stays pliable in deep cold (unlike all-season tires, which harden below 7°C), so they'll get you through a -30°C morning. They're not quite as grippy on packed ice as a dedicated winter tire like a Michelin X-Ice or Bridgestone Blizzak — if you regularly drive at those temperatures on icy roads, a true winter tire is still the safer pick.
How long do all-weather tires last in Calgary?
Most premium all-weather tires (CrossClimate2, WeatherPeak) carry 60,000–80,000 km treadwear warranties. In real Calgary use — meaning you're running them year-round through summer heat, winter cold, and our pothole-heavy spring — expect 4 to 6 years on a typical sedan or crossover. Heavier vehicles and aggressive drivers wear them faster.
Do all-weather tires hurt fuel economy compared to all-season?
Slightly. The deeper tread blocks and softer winter-capable compound create a bit more rolling resistance. Most drivers see a 1–3% fuel-economy drop versus a comparable all-season. The trade-off is one set of tires year-round and full winter-traction certification.
Can I run all-weather tires on my truck or SUV?
Yes — most major manufacturers make all-weather tires in light-truck and SUV sizes. Michelin CrossClimate2 SUV and Bridgestone Dueler all-weather variants are popular at our shop with Calgary RAV4, CR-V, F-150, and Tacoma drivers. If you tow heavy or do significant off-road work, a dedicated A/T tire (like the BFGoodrich KO3) is usually a better fit.

What "all-weather" actually means in Calgary

All-weather is a Canadian-specific tire category that didn't really exist 15 years ago. The rubber compound stays pliable below 7°C and the tread is designed to bite into snow and slush. To carry the 3PMSF symbol — the little mountain-and-snowflake on the sidewall — a tire has to pass a Transport Canada snow-traction test.

Here's what that actually means for a Calgary driver:

  • Legal in any Alberta winter condition. Including the winter-tire requirement on Highway 93 to Banff and the Trans-Canada through the mountains (Oct 1 – Apr 30).
  • Pliable rubber below 7°C. Where standard all-season rubber turns to plastic — that's the temperature where the difference shows up.
  • No fall or spring changeover. Skip the November rush and the April rush every year.
  • No storage problem. Most Calgary apartments and condos lose the storage debate — all-weather sidesteps it entirely.

The trade-off: an all-weather tire is a compromise. A dedicated winter tire is still better at -25°C on packed ice. A dedicated summer tire is still better in the August heat on Glenmore. If you live somewhere that gets one extreme more than the other, the dedicated tire wins. If you live in Calgary's actual weather — wild swings, chinooks, dry winter sidewalks one week and 15cm of snow the next — all-weather is a sane choice.

The all-weather tires we stock in Calgary

We carry every major brand that makes a real 3PMSF all-weather tire. The most-asked-for at our shop:

Michelin CrossClimate2

The category benchmark. Quiet, long tread life, excellent in light-to-moderate snow, holds up in summer heat. Our most-installed all-weather tire.

Bridgestone WeatherPeak

Newer to the category, very strong in wet braking. A solid CrossClimate2 alternative usually a few dollars per tire cheaper.

Toyo Celsius II

Best price-to-performance in the all-weather category. Often the answer when the budget is tight but you still want 3PMSF.

Continental TrueContact

Quiet, high-mileage, popular with SUV and crossover drivers who want a refined daily-driver feel.

BFGoodrich Advantage Control

Sole 3PMSF all-weather pick in the BFG lineup — biting tread on packed snow and a touring-grade ride for daily Calgary commutes. Popular with truck and SUV drivers who want the BFG name without committing to a dedicated winter set.

General Altimax 365 AW

Value pick. Owned by Continental, surprisingly good wet performance for the price.

When all-weather is the right call (and when it isn't)

Choose all-weather if you:

  • Commute mostly on plowed major roads (Deerfoot, Glenmore, Stoney, Macleod)
  • Don't want to deal with a second set of tires
  • Live in a condo or apartment with nowhere to store winters
  • Drive a sedan, crossover, or daily-driver SUV
  • Make occasional mountain trips in winter and need the 3PMSF rating for the Banff highway

Stick with a dedicated winter tire if you:

  • Commute through rural Alberta back roads or mountain highways daily in winter
  • Drive a heavy truck or tow regularly through winter
  • Park outside and routinely start your day on -30°C packed ice
  • Do regular winter mountain trips through Rogers Pass or the Coquihalla

For most Calgary city drivers, all-weather is the right answer. If you treat snow like sport or rack up serious mountain kilometres every winter, a dedicated winter tire (paired with a summer or all-season for the warm months) is still the right call.

Installation, warranties, and what's included

When you buy a set of all-weather tires at Prince Tires:

  • Same-day install where we have your size in stock. Most common Calgary sizes are stocked.
  • Manufacturer treadwear warranty passed through. Michelin and Bridgestone both run 60,000–80,000 km warranties on their all-weather lines.
  • Road-hazard coverage available on select brands. Ask at quote time — Michelin, Bridgestone, and a few others offer it on premium lines.
  • Free re-torque check at 50–100 km. Calgary's freeze/thaw swings can loosen lug nuts. We'll re-tighten them at no charge.
  • TPMS service included with install. We'll reset, replace stems, or swap sensors as needed.
  • Price Match Guarantee. Match any written quote from another Calgary tire shop on the same model and size.

Not ready to install today? We'll hold your tires for up to two weeks while you sort out scheduling. Call (403) 452-4283 to reserve a set, or book online when you're ready.
